Sopwith Stats reports on games of Sopwith played by post, via e-mail and on the web.  There are at least three places where the latter type of game can be played, on another part of this site (For Whom The Web Rocks), on Tom Tweedy's Diplomacy 2000 site and at Mike Dean's Psychozine site.

Issue #34 included a proposal to change the way that Ace status is gained and retained. The follow-up to that is included here. Sopwith games seem to be quite healthy at the moment, although all of the new games are e-mail based. No games have been abandoned, and I will do my best to ensure that it stays this way. To help with this, I am willing to pick up any games that are stalling for any reason and run them to completion. All I need to do this is the latest position and the contact details for all players.

CALCULATING ACES

Last time, I put forward a proposal that Aces should be calculated on their most recent games rather than all the results they've ever gained. This didn't receive much support, although the surprising trend in the responses was the number of people who thought this had already been changed, when it was only a suggestion for discussion.

There is a simple alternative to the suggestion, and one that has been used before. Every now and then, someone runs a Sopwith game and declares it to be a no-Aces game, so even if a player has Ace status, it doesn't count for that game. I plan to offer this as an option with For Whom The Web Rocks, with the aim of encouraging new players to try the game with some hope of lasting more than a few rounds.

AIRBORNE

These games are the ones known to have started since last time. We have twelve games in this list, down from last time, but this covers a nine month period rather than sixteen months. All of these games are e-mail games, with the reports appearing on the web.

LOST IN THE CLOUDS

While a few games could be classed as stalling, none of them are desperate enough to be abandoned, so this section is empty this time.

STOOGING AROUND

These are the games known to be active, including those that started since the last issue. The games in Hopscotch and Underneath the Mango Tree have been static for a while for various reasons, but I am assured that they are not being abandoned.

DOWN TO EARTH

These are the games that have been reported as complete since the last issue. We have nine games this time, six of which also started since the last issue. Click on the game number for full details of each game.

KILLS TABLE

This is the place to find out which pilots have made the most kills. This is based on completed games. Tony Dickinson confirms his position at the top of this list by adding another 6½ kills to his total. The arrows mark the pilots who have made kills since the last report. The list is limited to pilots with five or more kills to their credit, the 'real life' requirement for Ace status.

ACES HIGH

Only one pilot gained Ace status since the last issue - Stuart Black. The list is presented in points order rather than alphabetically. For an alphabetical list of current Aces, rather than this snapshot for issue #35 of the stats, see the separate Aces page.

AFTERWORD

The ability to produce statistics relies on the co-operation of everyone involved in the games. Without feedback from the GMs or the players, the information wouldn't be available.

If you run a game of Sopwith, I would like to know the details of scoring and kills. In fact, I need this detail to maintain the statistics. There are a number of games where the only details given are who won and how many points/kills the pilots had, which doesn't allow full positions to be given. Please consider me for your circulation list. For paper zines, trade with For Whom The Die Rolls is always an option.

If you're interested in running Sopwith in your zine, the rules explain the game. You don't really need anything else other than six willing volunteers, but you might like a copy of my playing area graphic (17kb) to include in the game reports. This includes the necessary graphics for the planes and player numbers, which you can cut and paste over the relevant hexes.

Thank you.
